If you have World Adventures expansion I would say that collecting is probably the most lucrative occupation in the sims. (Yet another reason WA is my favorite expansion and a feature I take for granted.) You can do it while employed or unemployed. The key to collecting is knowing what to do with what you collect. You never have to find Tiberium in the world. You can make it if you know how. The key is transfiguration with the Carter's XL Display Case.
Here is an online guide to collecting and transfiguration. http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/skills/collecting/worldadventures/transfiguration.php
Note: None of these are cheats. They are built into the game. But you can play it for years and never know anything about this feature.
If you have Supernatural you have the gem cutter and the cost of cutting gems becomes zero so a lot of the information about cost in the guide is out of date as it was written before Supernatural came out. But absolutely nothing beats being able to produce your own Tiberium and soulpeace gems for making money in the game.
See...forgot about it! My sister has done this, but I completely forgot it existed. Transfiguration is a great idea!
