Played TS3 since 2009 but took an extended break around 2011-2014, I'll chime in a few of my personal things.
I've found I've always made my own Sims, usually long standing characters ever since the Sims 1. No difference here, used to be for the longest time though I always made my Sims significant others, nowadays they usually marry in premades however. Since I like to play aimlessly it means I generally form the story on the fly around that with the only real goal I ever have from the start being killing a certain Sim if I'm on that world as soon as I can, also gives me room to suddenly have a new story around the Sims met.
I leave premades as they are for most part, although I do fix their outfits if it's lacking an outerwear category, and I do let them use a 2nd outfit for everydays fairly often. To me most premades are outfit wise fine with the only horrendous offenders being ones I'd never really move in anyway
I know for a shameful fact I have had far too many saves to count. I think I ended up going through a save every 3 weeks sometimes, with a few longer ones that last a year or two, half of the time with the same Witchpire I've made since the Sims 1, she'd be my absolute favourite made Sim even after going through two occults and drastically altering her personality from a dogooder into just plain down evil years ago. Though hey on the topic of favourites, I do enjoy playing Elvira too when I get a chance in Bridgeport.
