It must be very annoying if you don't know about it beforehand. Being a regular on the forums meant I knew about the update being required with the digital versions, so when I reinstalled my sims 3 I used the disc versions instead.
I would ask if you can have a refund if I were you - I guess the outcome will depend on where you purchased them.
I find the whole 'digital ownership' rules to be quite alarming. For instance - with Kindle books, to think that Amazon could withdraw my account if they thought they had reason to do so and I would lose access to all my many purchased books. Not likely, of course, but my purchases should be owned by me in my opinion. I paid for them. And so should our digital games, sims store downloads etc.
