I am one of the unusual people who did actually read most of the agreement when I purchased most of my games. As a result, when I purchased Sims 4 base game, I saw Sims 3 disks on sale at greatly reduced prices in local stores I purchased all of the Sims 3 disks I needed to cover the digital download packs I had for Sims 3.
I think the people in the shop thought I was a little bonkers at the time but I said I didn't trust EA to leave Sims 3 alone as they have reserved the right to do what they like to it at any time.
Since I wanted to be able to continue to play the game I had purchased in the manner it was played when I first purchased it, I was prepared to spend a little bit of money then to put my mind at rest.
If I have issues with Origin at some later date I'll remove it from my computer.
At this stage I haven't launched Origin for several months and probably won't launch it again unless I'm off line as I don't want to have unexpected updates forced on me. Especially if those updates change the way I play Sims 3.
I've got several games that require Origin to launch them, including Sims 4. I'm prepared to abandon all of them permanently if that is what I have to do to keep Sims 3 installed in its original format.
It's nice you had the foresight to plan ahead. I did too for a while but while looking through my games, last night noticed there were 2 stuff packs I didn't have & researched them. I learned they were good packs, so I decided to buy them.
Therein lies my downfall. I really didn't do anything wrong. Just got the bright (not so bright) idea to buy 2 stuff packs.
Maybe this happened to me so others can realize it could happen to them; & maybe they will prepare themselves.
I did notice today the games on disk are not easy to find anymore and after thoughtful contemplation, realized EA is steering everyone
toward digital downloads. Sims 4 is already there. So when EA server goes down, people won't be able to play their games. It will affect
Sims 3 players too because when they force people to upgrade Origin, the game won't start without it unless you never upgrade Origin.
If you want to play Sims 4 you have to upgrade Origin. See where its going ?
So its great you planned ahead & hope it gives you many playing hours & enjoyment.
edit: and that's the reason why I have two different Sims games on 2 different computers. One has Origin fully updated
& I was able to install the 2 stuff packs on that of course. But that computer has Origin fully updated because it has Sims 4 on it.
But the main computer I play Sims 3 on, I wasn't able to install them on it, because I wanted to keep Sims 3 game intact & didn't patch it to 1.69.
So now there is division. Where we were always able to have more than one Sims game on one computer now we have
to separate them.
I don't want to be in a position where EA servers goes down & I can't play my game.
This keeps confusing me. You keep saying this, to one degree or another, and I'm trying to understand it. Please explain what you mean. Maybe simmers here can help you because simply going to patch 1.69 shouldn't effect how you play your game, only having to have origin and what has to load.
When companies put things on their servers you are at their mercy. You play when they say you play. If their equipment goes down, you don't play. All digital content will be on EA servers which means if you want Sims 3 under the umbrella of Sims 4, you have to go through Origin
because that is the designated gateway for EA servers.
Do you follow ?
I didn't want to be in that position with Sims 3 where everything was on EA server, I could only play when they didn't have tech difficulties with their servers etc.
No 100%, but I think I get the gist. I guess it threw me off cause I do have more than one sims game on my computer (I have 3 at the moment, Sims 2, Sims 3, and Sims 4 - and only my sims 4 requires origin) and wasn't sure if you was having problems running two separate games... I don't know at this point. :D
What SP's are you missing on disc? I had pretty good luck finding my missing SP's on disc, for a reasonable price. I could give a quick look and see if I could find one for you (Provided you're in the US, I don't know how to search other countries sites). ETA: And one of my missing SP's was Sweet Treats. I really thought that one was going to get pricey, but it really wasn't. :)
Those 3 games are on that one computer in my house as well. You say only Sims 4 requires Origin.
With what has recently happened to me, I'd have to disagree. I bought 2 stuff packs for Sims 3.
I tried to install them & had to do it because I bought them through Origin.
I was denied access unless I patched my game to 1.69, which I didn't want to do.
Does Sims 3 need Origin ?
Sims 2 is also on Origin. Remember they just gave out a complimentary copy recently. And I thought it was because they were being nice.
No they are trying to get everyone away from the disks onto Origin.
I have all the Sims 2 disks so there is nothing they can do about that. If anything goes it will be Origin.
But its getting harder to find anything Sims 3 related on disk now.
Sims 4 is totally online.
Imagine what Sims 5 (if there will be one) will be.
