It's generally a good advice to hover over a grayed out area with the mouse. The game will tell why this option is not available.
My wife is the same. It happens often that
she said "I can't do ..."
Me "Why not?"
She "It's grayed out"
Me "Well hover with the mouse over it. There should be an explanatory text coming up"
