You may not have had an SSD or two drives of any kind on your older laptop. The dual small C, larger D drive setup is only one of many configurations.
As long as your prior saves are not damaged in any way, they should always be transferable. So should most of the rest of your game folder, including content. But it's best to start out with a fresh game folder when doing an install on a new computer and test things out to make sure they work as expected before adding back in the older and ongoing stuff. :)
