@Aine ... You can literally do hundreds of thousands of things in Sims 3.
I would say a million, but then someone may try to actually count how many things you can do ... :D
It just depends on what kind of base player you are.
Some people like achieving goals, others like exploring.
Mikezumi had a good suggestion ... Don't pile on way too much early in your save.
You also really don't need to have a master plan.
You could treat your Sim like a human.
You wake up, you're hungry, and with any luck you may make some pancakes without burning the house down.
If you make it that far, well your day is off to a good start.
It's probably a bit deep for beginners and would require some help ...
But if I had it all to do over again, I wish the game had started more like a Nothing Is Free Challenge.
That way a player could learn everything that is available starting with nothing.
Then they could build their family and the world around them, constantly adding new opportunities.
But whatever you do, have fun ...
Play the game, and don't let the game play you.
