Game saving options

I just started over with a fresh install of the Sims 3 games on a new computer after not having played the game for a really long time. I just started back to playing the game yesterday night, so I have only saved the game once so far. There are two save options, save and save as. I used the save as option for the first save of it. Is it best to keep using the save as option after each time I exit the game or is it fine to just tell it to save it? What's the difference between to two save options?
  • When you do a regular Save, the game demotes the existing save by that name if there is one to a backup file (and thus overwrites any existing older backup) before saving the new one. By continuing to do that, you only ever have one automatically made backup of your saved game.

When you do a Save As but don't change the name of the save from last time, it does exactly the same thing.

If you use Save As most of the time and change the name slightly each time such as by adding a number or the date on the end, then you can have 4, 6, 10, or as many as you want (until you run out of drive space) saves of the game from various points in time in case something should go wrong and you need to revert gameplay for a do-over. After a while of course you can just delete or overwrite the older saves if they are not needed. This is the best method to ensure you don't get stuck with both a game save and one auto-generated backup that are both unusable if something bad has happened and it becomes far less likely that you could lose your entire game all at once as opposed to, say, the last sim week or two of it.

Thank you for the info. I'll just continue to do the save as option then. When I saved as the first time by default it just had the neighborhood name in there and I just left that in there and saved it. So, next time I save my game I just have to change that a little bit each time in case anything happened to the game. Would even putting he Sim family's name at the end of the save as file name be okay? or is it best to keep it more simple with a number and date as you suggested?

I'd highly recommend, SimfamilyName_# to differentiate between saves.

okay, thanks. Also, I was wondering why does it ask me if I want to save my town before I exit the game? If I have already done the save as first is it necessary to do that? Does it affect the town in any way to tell it to just exit the game?

It just does it to psych you out. Just ignore it if you've saved beforehand. :D

oh, okay. Thanks for you help.
  • NRaas Saver is basically an annoying but effective alarm clock to remind players to save at regular intervals.

We are not adding an auto-save mod because it is not possible to play the game while it is being saved and no way to stop the game from saving once such a procedure has begun. For players where saves take seconds of course that wouldn't likely bother them much, but for those whose saves take several minutes that would probably drive them crazy.

Others may have to correct me on this, but I think AwesomeMod (a Core Mod) does offer an auto-save feature?
  • I wish Nraas Saver had an auto-save mode that kicks in because I lost two hours(maybe a little less) of gameplay just now, including taking a sim through CAS after she aged up.

But, as I pointed out in my PM, other save methods aren't compatible with Nraas. If AwsomeMod is compatible with Nraas, I'll try it out.
