I didn't like them. They were a cute idea, but they often blocked your child from leaving their bed (if the bed didn't have access on both sides) and the fact that they didn't leave completely once your child was a teen. If by the second day of their 'teen life' if you didn't change them into a real sim, they should have disappeared entirely. I personally using testing cheats to delete them if I have a child who gets one because I can't stand them.
Basically, they were not well programmed. Your toddler/child/teen sim will often ignore everyone completely to build a relationship with the imaginary friend, while their relationship with their actual family suffers (if you allow freewill on High to dominate and don't interfere with their interactions with the doll at all). It could have been a nice addition if well done but...wasn't.
