So, Katie and Engus were flying around the jumping course.
Feeling quite certain and proud of the young stallion's abilities, Katie took him over the final, firey jump.
Confetti flew; Katie yodelled and clapped Engus on the shoulder as they landed safely on the other side. But a few strides on the young horse started to veer and prance. Then Katie realized that her seat was VERY warm!
Soaked and freezing, Katie dashed into the house, not noticing that the doghouse was currently haunted.
Everett ordered her into a hot bath and went out to unsaddle Engus. Wren decided to get up to some mischief with Binky, while her parents were otherwise occupied. Playing in the snow by moonlight turned out to be a lot soggier than she'd expected though.
A few nights later, Katie returned to the fish hatchery to reinforce her relationship with Misty the unicorn. She was determined that the next foal would be a mystical cross, and possibly such a foal could be beneficial to the unicorns as well. Katie wasn't sure if they were vulnerable to trypanosomiasis, but Electrum had proved quite prolific in passing his resistance on, and it certainly couldn't hurt. The mare was initially aloof, as always, but warmed up quickly when offered apples. She even accepted homemade granola this time.
That night she dreamed Mary had quietly foaled when no one was looking - they hadn't even expected the foal for several months. The newly-named Emily seemed healthy enough, however. And curious about these creatures that looked and smelled so different from her mother. Katie woke up and ran outside to find a Mary happy to see her but completely unaccompanied by foal. She wondered if the baby would look like the filly in her dream. She hoped it would have stripes instead.
The next day Engus was tested and examined by the Clydesdale registry. He got top scores in both racing and jumping. Katie spent a long evening talking to him and telling him how wonderful he was. He had the resistances, and was shortly approved by the breed registry to sire 3/4-bred foals from select mares. As soon as his training was done, he'd be off. The registry sent a check for $12,923 to cover his training and care.
That night Bill's ghost decided to build an igloo. Perhaps it was too cold even for ghosts?
The next afternoon, Wren and a friend sat next to the igloo to do their homework. When Katie asked why they didn't do that inside the igloo - or the house - Wren told her that would make too much sense.
Katie shook her head and took Mary Cream out for a ride. The mare was barely saddle-broken and needed the exercise since she wasn't currently working. Since Engus would be gone soon, Katie steered the mare towards the hatchery, where a glowing aurora could be seen.
As expected, Misty was there, as well as a whole host of wild horses. Mary mingled with the herd while Katie requested that the unicorn join her family.
Misty said yes.
And ran straightaway to the ranch. Electrum was delighted to welcome her home.
