It was time to return Mary Cream, and Katie had a celebrity event to attend, so she asked Everett to run the mare over to the EC. She had completely forgotten that he didn't really know how to ride! However, he nobly agreed and went out to groom and saddle the big mare - grooming at least he did regularly - then managed to get up on her back and guide her in the general direction of the Center. He was extremely relieved to get there in one piece, and silently vowed to learn to ride properly. "I'll train one of these foals myself before the next Fjord!"
Electrum may not have noticed Mary's departure; he was finding Misty absolutely fascinating. Foal number nineteen, on the way!
While at the event, Katie took a try at the Claaaaw machine. She came home with a haunting addition to the gnome collection. It was quite eerie, as it sometime hovered or danced above the ground.
Katie returned to the workshop to find her latest invention, which had been only half-finished, mysteriously all but complete. Everett insisted he hadn't touched it, and neither he nor Wren knew anything about inventing - but he mentioned he had taken one of the metal gnomes out of the workshop earlier, when he'd found it sitting on the workbench.
As she left the now fully-complete time machine, she passed Bill's ghost working out on the treadmill. Apparently, all the late-night cooking he did (leaving the spoiled food to be found on the counter in the morning) had added too much ectoplasm to his physique.
Early the next morning, Katie gave Emily a good grooming and rode her out while the ground was still covered in frost.
When she got back, the sun was bright, the frost was gone, and she had to laugh at the summer gnome 'rolling' along on his inner tube. But she forgot about him as soon as she saw what was in the meadow.
They named him Evanescence. A unicorn foal in stripey pajamas.
