Misty was very proud of her baby, and stood watchful guard in the pasture at night. Although Evanescence was happy to sleep in a stall, his dam preferred to stay outside. Katie frequently wondered if the unicorn mare was aware of the trypanosome problem and deliberately contributing to the plan. Certainly there were people who claimed unicorns were as intelligent as people, as well as ones who claimed they were 'just' animals.

A few days later, the new mare Fern was due to arrive. Katie got up early to tend her garden (she'd prepared the spare stall the day before) and was amused to discover her new tree had borne a rather unexpected fruit:
Then she ran downstairs as a horse van pulled up out front. Fern was a 'white' dun (technically a buckskin dun); the Fjord's already light gold tones lightened further by the cream to practically white. Mane, tail and dun markings still stood out crisp and black, distinguishing her from the 'yellow' or palomino dun, with white mane and gold markings. Interestingly, her dorsal stripe was barbed, with lots of little side stripes projecting from it.
Fern settled in well, politely deferring to the unicorn mare and very friendly to Electrum and the colt. Evanescence seemed delighted by the new companion and flew around the pasture as only a unicorn could.
Not too long after he grew up into a splendid unicorn stallion. Fern was a bit startled.
That evening, Misty bid her son and the family farewell and vanished into the rain, leaving only her halter behind.
Katie went down a few weeks later to the fish nursery, to see if Misty was there, but found a black stallion now patrolling the area instead.
So the family herd was back to three, herd stallion, young stallion and a single mare.
