Thanks! I'm glad you could find time to catch up. Pastelle turns up below.
--------------------------------
Katie had reached the heights of fame, making national news and even a talk show or two over the breeding program. A number of other people were trying similar programs, but few zebras had Electrum's superlative temperament, and not all were as consistent in passing on the disease resistance. Several years of unfavorable weather had limited spread of the trypanosomes, but the predictions were this next year should be excellent conditions for the flies that carried the parasites to thrive. Several celebrities had contacted them, to see the horses and get their names associated with the project. Katie and Everett tried to ascertain which ones were truly interested, and invited them to visit and showed them around the town. Everett was showing one such guest around the Art Center on the evening that Easter foaled.
Although she had been put in her stall that evening, Easter was a great opener of latches, so Pastelle was born in a snowbank.
As soon as she was discovered, the filly was hustled into the barn and dried. She was a pretty little zebra with her dam's pastel shadings and butterflies under her gold stripes.
Knight had reached the end of his training, so Everett groomed him to perfection and took him to the EC. With zebra antibodies but no stripes, the grey stallion brought $7500 into the bank.
Wren thought that seemed like a splendid amount of money, and staged a royal party at dinner. She'd been begging her parents to let her work at the art center too, but Katie and Everett were concerned that projects like glass-blowing and blow-torching metal sculptures might be a bit too appealing and dangerous for her. Instead, Everett spent part of the money for Knight on an easel for Wren's very own.
Wren spent the day out painting (it was another Snow Day) but as night fell the temperature dropped sharply. A blizzard warning was posted, and the Sparrows made sure all the horses were securely locked in the barn. The stalls, though, didn't lock, and Easter quickly opened hers, letting Pastelle out to nap on the barn floor.
Katie then repaired to the hot tub in the greenhouse. Everett joined her shortly thereafter, and they listened to the winds roar outside the frosted windows while relaxing in the steamy warmth, breathing the scents of the thriving garden a few feet away. Storms were much more pleasant with good shelter and good company.
