Snow was still on the ground, but it was noticeably warmer when Katie groomed and rode out on Crimson the next day. The mare finished her training on that ride, so Katie took her on to the EC. The entertainment company had decided to sell her, since she had no stripes. It was hoped Mielle and Skipper would do better. Katie merely pointed out that genetics were unpredictable; all she could do was breed the mares to her stallion and they would get what they got.
Wren worked with the horses after school (they'd had to go back that day, in spite of the snow). She was particularly attracted to Skipper, whose full name was Sparkling Sailor. The mare seemed happy enough to get groomed.
Mielle was really averse to the cold weather, to the point it was sometimes hard to get her out of the stable. Marcie had spread hay for her in the tack area, which led to a few problems.
Skipper was friendly to Katie as well - she was a very good-natured horse, but she had a taste for the black beetles that tended to overwinter in the barn. Katie had a few words for her. And then a few more. Then they went for an evening ride around the grounds.
The next morning Katie picked out a lot of hooves. In spite of the snow, the air temperatures were warming so fast she changed to lighter clothes before riding out on Mielle.
