The future looked bright, but disaster loomed. Mielle's restlessness proved to be the first sign, and while it faded by nightfall, the palomino mare woke in distress.

When Wren came home, flushed with the success of her show, she heard the mare calling from the stable. Released into the yard, the mare walked stiffly, pawing the ground. Wren ran for her mother.

They ran out to see Mielle go down, rolling in distress. Katie sent Wren to call the vet NOW! and ran to haul the mare to her feet. Mielle did NOT want to walk!

Katie insisted, and Mielle walked . . . and walked. Every time she dropped her head, Katie hauled it up. Binky and Everett brought her umbrella and stood in the rain for moral support, but she wouldn't relinquish the mare to anyone else.

Ages later, the vet arrived, took one look at the mare and looked grim. After a brief examination, he administered pain medication and loaded her into his horse van. Surgery was discussed, "grave prognosis", and Wren went to the barn to check on Honeybee. Mielle was taken off to the veterinary school, which was fortunately in the next town. Katie and Everett followed the vet in a taxi.

That's almost the last of the pictures I had. Unfortunately, I failed to look closely enough at the saves on my USB drive before I wiped the drive on my old computer - they were a year older than the last save ON the computer. I've nearly reconstructed things - Marcie has a new finish, and Binky had to be turned into a real boy again three times before he looked right. But we will be resuming the story with the last two pictures, and some new ones.
