What I personally do with TSR is go to the Featured Artists page and go through the user content on there. If an artist is featured you can be fairly sure that their downloads are good quality. Additionally, you don't have to surf through the entire site because Featured Artists usually has all types of creators there with items ranging from houses, makeup, hair, clothing, etc.

Also: TSR isn't really any more dangerous to download from than any other custom content website. As long as you have good virus protection you should be fine.
