How can we play videos in .avi format?

All my videos are in the Windows .avi format and I can't open them on my Mac. I looked for a setting where you could change the format to .mov but couldn't find it anywhere. Any suggestions on how to play the videos on a Mac?

  • I use Perian, which allows you to view many of the popular video formats, including .avi, with QuickTime.
  • You would think if they knew they were creating a program that would be used cross platform... they would have picked a format that was native to both... or at least installed a viewer with the software.

But that would have been intuitive. right? :)

I think there may be something else going on with the sims 3 avi's, though. I have the mac version of Spore and it creates avi's and my Quick Time had no problem with those!
  • I'd suggest downloading VLC. That's the program i use for Sims videos--plays no problem!

It is strange that they didn't pick a format which was natively supported by OS X. As Tyr_Arcana mentioned VLC player is great and will play almost anything that you throw at it.
  • That's weird. You would think a free player would be more likely to play an uncompressed file vs. a compressed one.

Yeah, they should have chosen something native to both. Sometimes I wonder if common sense is missing in the software industry :D

Download VLC, it is quite simply the best video player you will ever find, it can play pretty much every format known to man, flawlessly.

I am now using VLC, too. Compared to all the other programs, installation was a breeze. Flip 4 Mac was a nightmare! And three websites and mirrors later, I discovered that it was WMV reader!
