I usually age sims up with MasterController, not a cake. Sometimes I'll gather the family around if the sims is aging to a teen or older, sometimes not. Depends on the game. With larger households (above 14) I tend to age sims up in such a way that the birthday doesn't affect the action queues of the rest of the household. OTOH, if the 'main' sim in a game ages up I'll throw them a party at a venue, but that's rare.
