I used have my main sims wear the same outfit every day for an age span. Then change it when they aged up. Or, for sims I'd play for a very long time, I'd change it whenever I felt like it.
Currently, my sims' children who move out after aging to YA get a new outfit each birthday. The parents, who I'm playing long term, get new outfits whenever I feel like it. They currently have 4 everyday outfits, one for each season, which requires a mod. They have only one outfit it all the other categories.
I picked other since I do a mix of options in my current game. Mostly, through, my sims get one outfit they wear until their next birthday.
