True, but just because an option is there doesn't mean it has to be used. The other effects of the inappropriate trait would make befriending others, I think, more difficult. Or maybe I'm thinking of something like no sense of humor and socially awkward. Plus with the slob trait, I don't think the Sim would autonomously use a sponge bath anyway. However, I don't really play with those trait combinations so I don't know. When I do finally start up a homeless scenario, the traits are not written in stone as I do want to create a backstory as why and how they became homeless and some or all of the traits may be related to that.
Now mentioning the mooch trait is one of many ways to play realistically because that is what some homeless people actually do. If you have nothing, you ask. Or other times some look for whatever they can find in dumpsters, trash cans, etc. As for the challenge it pertains to in gameplay, I'd also like to mention as CravenLestat stated on pg1 that the trait mooch is also skill based. I don't know how much simoleons can be mooched in the beginning, but I can guess it's not a lot. In addition, I don't remember if a relationship status is needed first to be able to successfully mooch.
Community gardens using the Barrier Entry System was in direct response to it being too easy for homeless Sims when the player has that control. Of course, one doesn't really need it, but it does help to enrich gameplay further. Though yes, you can skip community gardens, etc altogether because hey, "Just because an option is there doesn't mean it has to be used." The Sims give players OPTIONS and the players choose how they want to play. Easy, Intermediate, or Difficult. There is more than just one way to play.
