I also had looked into this issue when I first was using Aurora Skies. There has never been an official fix to the world. I will point you to two threads that discuss some fixes.

The other thread that is on the forum may be the one you are referring to in your first paragraph.

I personally have learned to live with the grey snow. Back in February, I created a thread to show why I am fine with the gray snow.
