Issues with Private Investigator Profession

I have been playing a private investigator for 8 sim days, and a couple of issues have come up.

When I send him to the police department to "use his psychic powers" to help solve a case, when he reaches the end of his time there, instead of getting paid for his hours of work, the game resets the lot and sends him home.  This has happened on two separate occasions.  When he got a case where he was asked to help with their case load, before the above two cases, it worked fine.

For anyone who has played a PI, have you successfully completed this case?  Or is it glitched and never works?  Or is it some issue with my own game only?

For his current case, where he is supposed to be investigating a referee who made a very bad call in a game, that upset one of the players on the team, he has to do a stakeout.  He went to the lot and the target met up with another sim and gave her something, right in front of my PI, but my sim stayed there for quite a while longer, then said he didn't see anything.  I had him repeat the stakeout, with the same results.  The targeted sim again met with another sim and gave them something, but my PI claimed to not have seen anything.  By then he was very hungry, and his wife was eating dinner without him, so I sent him home.  Should I just cancel this case, or is it common for a PI to have to repeat stakeouts multiple times before they succeed?

If it is, I'm not sure it's worth it.  I've discovered that no matter how much they have to do for any given case, how much time they spend on it, or what level they are at in the career, they are paid exactly the same amount.  If he were in the law enforcement career, at the same level he's at in the PI career, he'd be making more money in less time.

Or you could use NRaas DebugEnabler to assign the next step of the case, bypassing the stakeout entirely.

For the issue with the police station, try MC reseting the lot, when your sim isn't there, of course.  I don't know whether this is the same problem as with other rabbithole lots, where the sim and any others on the lot get kicked out, but it's not uncommon.

As for the benefits of playing a PI, I don't think they're supposed to be monetary.  The fun, if it's fun at all, is in playing an active profession, not to mention the campiness of the cases and dialog that goes with them.  At least the weekly stipend increases though.

Thank you.  I guess so long as the stakeouts eventually work, I can just keep trying, or check on the DE route if it goes on for too long.

I didn't try resetting the police station, as I reset the entire town withe NRaas MC, once a week.  And yes, everybody got kicked out when it reset instead of completing my PI's case opportunity, though everybody except him was only kicked to the outside of the building, while he was reset to home.  I will try resetting just the lot next time.

I am enjoying playing a PI, but at the beginning of this game, he and his wife needed extra money so they could buy some things they needed, and she wasn't making much with her film career.  She still isn't, but she just gave birth to twins.  With that surprise and her becoming a one star celebrity, I would like to get them a slightly larger home on a lot where there's room to put up a fence.  So they could use some extra funds.  But I'm thinking that he could try moonlighting as a writer to bring in some extra money.  He'd also be more available for sharing childcare duties that way.  That is going to get more intense soon, when they become toddlers.

I tried resetting the police lot, but it still glitched out and sent him home on the "psychic" case, which he still keeps getting.  Other cases that involved helping the police with their caseload or specific cases seem to work just fine.  So I simply turn down the one that doesn't.

I'm being more patient with stakeouts, and he recently succeeded with one on the fifth try.  I did finally find out how to get him to write a stakeout report, and he gets paid $450 for those, so that helps a lot.
