I haven't really had any extraordinary issues with IP, even when I reinstalled and played years later on my new laptop. It doesn't hurt to be safe, though.
Plus it seems some of my gameplay quirks could have saved my games, apparently. (I don't like anyone but my current household having a houseboat so I delete all the others.)
