There is a 1 in 100 chance that each jellybean is a black, poisonous one. So with 3 consumed in total, the probability of that happening is pretty low but as you saw it certainly can. A Death Flower would have saved them, but probably no one starts out a new game with those. No prior saves to revert to or was it too soon even for that?
The timing reminds me of an Atari console game I used to play decades ago. There was always a small chance that when you first take the starship into warp speed that you will crash into an asteroid or something that was right in front of it but too close to be seen through the viewscreen (windshield?) or whatever it was called. And if that happened, kaboom the game was over.
So this happened to me twice in the very beginning. Spend an hour studying the randomly generated star map for that game session, plan out the strategy, then finally begin to play and wham, it's all over.
High Score: 382 billion or something
