mermaids have no tails

I am having a similar problem. I made a sim into a mermaid with the happiness reward and she looked normal with a proper tail and scales, but when I sent her out into the sea to look for other mermaids I couldn't find any. Turns out that they all looked like normal sims in normal clothing (not even swim or scuba wear) under water, it was really odd looking. No tails at all.
