Restarting the Legacy...since I seem to have written myself into a corner with that - that and the fact that I ended up downloading a bad piece of cc.
Excerpt: The Chikamori Legacy.
“Why can’t you live with me, sis and Mom?” her voice was plaintive. “I can’t stand seeing you go through this;” she waved her arm to figuratively take in the whole park. “the hunting out of dumpsters, scrounging for food and sleeping on the cold, hard ground. How are you going to get through winter?”
“I’m not going to let this kill me.” Haruo smirked at her. River felt like belting him across the back of the head.
“I’m serious, dammit.” River growled at him.
Haruo looked at her for a long moment as if to weigh his answer. “How many people have you got living in that house? Your mom, you, your sister, Molly, Sandi and weren’t you saying that your aunt sleeps on the couch because there’s no room in your house for her? So, where exactly am I supposed to sleep?”
River smirked at him, “Well...maybe I could upgrade to a double bed and…” her voice trailed off as she saw her friend’s eyes narrow and his expression change to a frown.
“Uh...no…” He stopped for a moment assessing his view of the situation, “You know how fast city hall will come down on your Mom if she has someone completely unrelated to you guys living in their house in the manner of which you’re speaking of? It’s not worth the risk.”
Hang him, he was thinking about everyone other than himself. River thought. And what am I supposed to do if something happens to him? “What do you mean? Nobody other than the church is going to worry about whether we’re sleeping together.”
“No, I meant the living conditions. If there aren’t enough beds in the house for everybody, anybody who isn’t related to the homeowner is considered a tenant, the house is deemed an illegal tenancy and then I end up back out here anyways while your mother gets fined. Do you seriously think that’s a good option?”
River glowered at Haruo, Did he have to make it sound so dire as well as implicitly making her sound like an idiot for even suggesting that she try to protect him? She knew he was right **bleep** him. But she buried her face in his chest. “Well, you’d better stay safe and get yourself some sort of roof over your head. Because in one hundred and twelve days, I’m joining you, whether you like it or not. And I mean it...the day after my graduation, I’m on the street protecting your back.”
“Are you nuts?” he asked, “Do you really want this sort of life?”
“If it means I have you, yes. I’ll go through anything.” River’s voice was muffled because her head was nestled against his sleeveless grey hoodie. They spent a long moment cuddled together with Haruo’s arms around her. “ I mean that. I love you.” she murmured, her voice barely audible, but Haruo could feel the vibration of her voice against him. He really didn’t want to have her end up homeless alongside him, even if she was going to be a young adult in one hundred and twelve days, but she was damned and determined to be with him, even through his most trying times. “That’s the only concession you’re getting out of me.”
Haruo shook his head, he couldn’t understand why River was so adamant that she wanted to be with this abject failure of a life that he’d ended up in. And it seemed that she was going to up-end her life once she graduated high-school just to be with him. “You know what, let’s get out of here...and head to Central Park.” he said. "That way there’s no complaints about us loitering around rich man’s park.” his bitter sarcasm towards the Altos and the Landgraabs was palpable. “They don’t like us poor folk hanging around the neighbourhood.”
