If your Sim has the kleptomania trait, can they steal things to earn a living?
Edit: That would work especially well with the LTW:
Possession is Nine Tenths of the Law: 30,000 Lifetime Happiness Points Traits That Inspire This Lifetime Wish: Kleptomaniac Goal: Possess 50,000 Simoleons worth of stolen goods. Tips: Your Sim will need to be a kleptomaniac, and perhaps in the criminal career track to approach this wish with all you've got. Klepto high value items from wealthy neighbors, such as televisions and nice cars, to make it go faster.

Edit II: http://r21.imgfast.net/users/2116/15/76/34/smiles/3137150671.gif Well you could sell things at first or have another career along with this one. When reading this again I realize you must POSSESS 50,000 Simoleons worth of stolen goods.
But in any case the answer is still 'Yes' to use the kleptomaniac trait to its full advantage to make Simoleons.

What about selling the gifts we receive in the mailbox for simoleons?
My thought:
The mailbox gifts can be used to furnish your humble beginnings lot but cannot be sold.
AFTER the actual house is established you can sell the items to supplement income.
