Another tip I should have mentioned is - whenever I make a sim I save them as a .Sims3Pack file and put that file away somewhere safe as a backup. The way to save them that way is to go into Edit Town and find them in the library and click on their Share button. That saves a file in the 'Exports' folder in your Sims 3 folder. The Exports folder gets added when it is needed so may not be there until you click the share button for a sim or a build you want to backup.
I don't necessarily share them to the Exchange.
NOTE: The Exchange is not a good place to use as a backup location as sims and builds and whatever else is loaded there gets deleted occasionally.
