Chapter 5: Part 1: A New Life
In anticipation of our new arrival Red and I put some money into a renovations. We build an extra room for the TV and my easel, and a room for the baby. The baby’s room ended up a little bigger than it was supposed to be, due to an error on the contractor’s part, leaving us with a little bit less money then we wanted to furnish it (they still charged us, can you believe it!)

As the due date grew nearer Red confined me to the bed. He told me not to strain myself, because it could lead to early labor. I was pretty sure that I was close enough to the due date that it would be okay, but he meant well, and my back hurt like crazy, so I went along with it.

Apparently just walking to the kitchen was too much work for me, so Red made and brought all of my food, whenever I wanted it. The walk from the bed to the kitchen was short, but I’m sure he got a lot of exercise.
“I brought you some cereal,” He told me, walking in with a bowl in his hand. He wasn’t a very good cook, so I had cereal a lot.
“Thank you, Red.” I told him, taking the bowl.
He sat down next to me, and took the empty bowl back to the kitchen when I was done.
I wanted more than anything to get up and go paint, since sitting on the bed for a long period of time was not interesting. Finally I decided that it was a short distance, and an easy task, and it was something I needed to do.

I struggled to get up, and waddle over to my easel. With a few brush strokes there was a smile on my face. This was what I loved to do, but then Red came in to check on me.
“Greth?” He called, “Where are you.” He peered into the bonus room, and saw me up. “What are you doing?”
“Painting. I was bored.” I shrugged.
“I really think you should go lay down again.” He told me, grabbing my arm.

All the sudden I was angry. It must have been a rush of hormones, caused by him grabbing my arm.
“Painting is not over exerting myself!” I yelled, “I think I deserve to do something fun...a little respect from you, considering I’m carrying your child!”
Red took a step back, affected by my anger. He took a deep breath, “I’m sorry, Greth, you’re right. I was want you to be happy, but this is stressful for me.”
“Yeah. That’s what I tho-” A sharp pain ripped through me, I tried to keep talking, but I couldn’t. I felt like something was tearing at me from the inside.

“Greth? Are you okay?” Red asked.
I let out a whimper, that’s all I could do. Red’s eyes widened, realizing what was happening.
“Do you need me to take you to the hospital?” he asked.
“YES!” I screamed.
He took my hand and took out his phone to call a taxi. He must have regretted taking my hand, because I squeezed as hard as I could, and he didn't let go.

He didn't let go of my hand the whole way there. No matter how hard I squeezed, no matter how much I'm sure he wanted to let go, he shared a little bit of my pain.

He walked with me, up to the doors, and sat with me holding my hand the whole time, not even wincing.
And just before day break the next morning we had a little baby boy.

"I love you so much." Red told me, as I finally laid Cardinal down in his crib. "Even if you did almost break my hand." He laughed.
"Shhh..." I told him, putting my finger to my lips, "I don't want to wake Cardinal. Maybe we should take this into another room."
"Okay." Red whispered back, "He's so peaceful, I don't want to disturb him."

He pulled me into his embrace, and kissed me. It was a good thing Cardinal was already asleep.

And so, fueled by the love of a new baby, Red and I had some 'fun'. Once again we did what felt right at the time, and so began one of the stupidest things we could have done.
Did I mention that Red being an architect, and me being a painter was barely enough to support the two of us, let alone raise a family.
