Chapter 9: Finale

I couldn’t believe that my babies were growing up. It seemed like only a little while since they had been little, while since Cardinal was little. I still had Rudy and Scarlet, but my oldest was moving out. I hated to be that emotional, sobbing, mother when Cardinal moved, but I couldn’t help it.

He wasn’t moving far away, and he was moving in with friends but it was hard. He and Cyanna were going to live with his friends Jam, Robin, and Jam’s older brother, Cabernet. Cabernet was a college grad, and a good influence on all of them. I was sure that Cardinal was in good hands. Plus he had been asking for more freedom, since all his life he had to ask for our help, I was reluctant, but I let him go. He had made significant improvement, thanks to none other than this group of friends, and he deserved some independence.
Scarlet wiped some of my tears away, she was always very sweet that way, she hated to see anyone cry.
“It’s okay, Scarlet.” I told her.
“No cry.” She told me.

Cabernet came to pick Cardinal up, with Jam, Robin, and Cyanna already in his car. I felt like he was in good hands with them, Cyanna had really been able to help him. She brought him out of his shell and helped him make friends, she had introduced him to Robin and Jam.
“This is going to be awesome!” She said, as she hopped out of the car to meet Cardinal. “Just you, me, Jam, Robin, and Cabernet!”
“Yeah, I’m excited.” Cardinal answered.
“I just hope Jam and Robin don’t hook up while we’re all living together. That’d be awkward.” She smiled at him, and elbowed him in the arm.
“Yeah...”

Rudy had started school, and he was making friends easily. He also was doing very well without any help from Red or I. In fact when we came into the room he usually packed up his homework for the night. I think that he misinterpreted the way that we helped Cardinal, and was trying to make sure that we didn’t always help him
The only time he didn’t put it away was when his friend, Daffodil was over, and they were working on their homework together.

Scarlet had grown very attached to a teddy bear that Red had given to her for her birthday. She liked to carry it around the house with her, and she told me that when she went to school she would take it with her. I tried not to discourage her too much, but I knew that when the time came I would not let her take it to school.

Her favorite thing to do was the play with the teddy bear, with Red. He loved the opportunity to bond with her. Sometimes he tried to bond with Rudy, but Rudy was less open to it. I think that because Red was almost never home and hadn’t made an effort to bond when Rudy was really little. He had never connected with Red. Sometimes I felt bad about it, and I tried to convince him to spend more time with Red, but he would have none of it.

Rudy liked to hang out with his friend Daffodil. She was sort of the popular girl, but she was nice. He would often help her with her homework. Mostly they went to her house, but her parents were getting a divorce, and so it was hard for her at home and they started to come to our house. I tried not to bother him while they were working, although sometimes it didn’t sound like they were working. It often sounded like she was on the phone with her other friends. I didn’t know why he endured it, but he never complained about her, not even once. Although he didn’t talk to us that much.

Red and I were getting along really well. Sometimes we had little arguments, but nothing major. I realized that it was too much to ask for a perfect relationship. We had worked out most of our problems. My getting a job helped a ton, Red wasn’t as stressed and I felt like I was actually helping.

All in all I had a pretty good life. A husband who loved me, and three beautiful children. I wasn’t sure what else I was supposed to want.
