Chapter 1: Freedom

The day that I moved was both happy and sad. I hated to leave the comfort of my home, but I was excited. I’d never really had any independence, and it was coming all at once. I would no longer live with my parents, I was done with school, I was soon going to get a job. It was a bit of a system overload for me, but Cyanna was there. She had been my absolute best friend since... really when she was born. She was only a tiny bit younger than me, and our mom’s had been best friends.

We weren’t moving very far away but I told myself I would never go back home to ask for help. I was going to live with my friends, though I was not going to forget my parents, or Rudy and Scarlet.
Technically none of us were adults, except for Cabernet. I was surprised when my mom allowed me to go live with them, since Cabernet wasn’t exactly the most responsible guy, but I was glad. I think that she felt bad about holding my hand through the beginning of my life and thought that this would be a good way to introduce me to the real world.

Cyanna Chai, my best friend. I was glad that Cyanna was there. She and I were inseparable. Actually, inseparable might have been a little strong, but we were almost always together. She knew exactly how to help me when I was confused, without being condescending or putting me down.

Jam Jelly. He was a good friend of Cyanna’s. We got along okay, I mean I would consider us to be friends, but only because of Cyanna. I was perfectly fine with just one friend, but she was social and wanted more. I didn’t take offense to it, I completely understood.
We met Jam in high school. That was the first time we were around a lot of new people, since we went to a kindergarten through eighth grade school. He was in a couple of classes with us, and he and Cyanna became friends.

Robin Red. She was another friend of Cyanna’s. Everbody thought that we should have been best friends, since we were both red, but the fact was that she was a little too rebelious for me. She was very nice, but she did things that I did not agree with. Cyanna met her because she was friends with Jam. Sometimes she didn’t get along with Cyanna, because Cyanna was a straight arrow, and Robin got tired of that, but in the end they usually put their differences aside and got along.

Cabernet Jelly. He was Jam’s brother, and the only real adult in the house. My mom thought he must have been a good influence because he had gone to tons of extra school, but he liked to party. He usually came home with a different girl every few days, and I’m surprised that he didn’t have any children yet. Although he did watch over us pretty well, making sure that we didn’t get in on the partying that he did, making sure that we got up and went to work if we had to, basic stuff.

There were three bedrooms in the house, one for Robin and Cyanna, one for Jam and I, and one for Cabernet. Each bedroom had it’s own bathroom. They were all attached to the living room and kitchen, in sort of a dorm style.

The first day there Cabernet set some ground rules. No drinking, no being our after curfew, no drugs, don’t disturb him when he’s with a woman, don’t wake other people up, no babies, and he would not charge rent (except as a punishment for breaking too many rules). It wasn’t very many rules, and they all made sense, so I was sure I would have no problem following them.
