But short hair was easier to keep clean in the trenches so when they came home with short hair the men with long hair stood out as not being real men as they hadnt gone to war so soon all men got short haircuts to look like the real men and blend in with the returned soldiers. that would mean the men in Downton Abbey were out of style with short hair before WWI started in that show, and Ripper St. Perhaps it was the war before that.
