Thank you so much both.

NRaas ErrorTrap, Overwatch, and MasterController are wonderful for keeping saves healthy, even without any tweaking on the player's part. The first two automatically clean up corrupt or stranded data in the background; MC doesn't do anything unless you tell it to, but it's great for running a reset on anything from a stuck object or sim to the whole world.
Additionally, Traveler is critical if you have any packs that involve traveling—it replaces the fragile EA travel transition with one that's much more stable, in addition to being more flexible. Register manages role sims and stray animals, although it might not be necessary if you don't have Pets and don't get errors with other role sims. Traffic manages vehicle spawning: if Overwatch is reporting thousands of cars deleted every night, or your sims are constantly being followed around by the ice cream truck, it's a great addition.
Beyond that, adding mods is more about enabling features you'd like in-game or removing ones you don't want. So it would be easier for people here to make recommendations if you described what you're looking for.
All the mentioned mods with the exception of ErrorTrap work equally well on patches 1.67 and 1.69. For ET, be sure to get the one that corresponds to your type of install: 1.69/Origin, 1.67/disc (or Mac), or 1.67/Steam.
I'm mostly just looking to keep my saves safe and my game running smooth. I don't know what else the game needs for now. I'm sure things will annoy me as I play more though. :D
