Sims 3 on Linux

Jan. 14th has passed and Windows 7 will no longer be a supported OS. This has been a worry for me because I quite dislike Windows 10. I don't want to go into all the reasons. And it's not the only reason, but one of the reasons I've seriously considered giving up PC gaming. I thought maybe I'd build another Windows 7 machine and have it function as an offline "PC Mini" of sorts but I decided to check out Linux again today as a possible alternative.

I've been aware that some windows games can be installed and played on Linux, my brother is a linux gamer actually. But I certainly didn't know it had come so far since I last checked in on it. This tool, from Valve, called Proton is very intriguing. Here is a short description for protonDB-

"What is Proton?

Proton is a new tool released by Valve Software that has been integrated with Steam Play to make playing Windows games on Linux as simple as hitting the Play button within Steam. Underneath the hood, Proton comprises other popular tools like Wine and DXVK among others that a gamer would otherwise have to install and maintain themselves. This greatly eases the burden for users to switch to Linux without having to learn the underlying systems or losing access to a large part of their library of games. Proton is still in its infancy so support is inconsistent, but regularly improving.
"

I do indeed own Sims 3 on Steam. The game has been given a gold rating on Protondb.

Anyway, my hard drive needs replaced and I might just install Ubuntu on the new one. In the meantime, is anyone else running Sims 3 on Linux? Does it run well for you?

First of all, I've been pronouncing Linux wrong. Second of all, these guys make it seem so easy! I'm trying the thumb drive idea today to see if it's as easy as they say. :)

@Nikkei_Simmer Did you see this post?
  • Yes just got the notification @ZeeGee :). Well that’s great. Of course you might be able to understand it better than me. And if you manage to get it done before I can get back access to a computer, then I may be the one coming to you for answers. ?. I hope it solves the problems of Windows affecting us in unforeseen ways. The upside being that Linux is open-source which means the whole Linux community pitches in to solve OS problems and thus it shouldn’t have the QC problems that Windows has ~fingers crossed~

It is irritating to have to type on a iPhone touch pad -my fingers keep hitting adjacent keys and my typing accuracy has taken a headlong dive into the toilet along with my typing speed.

The thumb drive was easy. I got it installed and booted up just fine. It's so easy! It had apps and folders and was just as good as Windows. So I decided to do a trial run of installing it with Windows on my laptop before putting it on my desktop. Thank goodness. Because things went horribly wrong and if it weren't for the Lenovo restore function my laptop would be dead. But I learned a lot and had some fun! I might try again tomorrow.

ETA: I tried Ubuntu cause of the easy instructions.
  • I’m thinking I started this discussion way too soon. I wish I had the resources to upgrade my computer now. When I do, I’ll come back to this thread and report. @ZeeGee I hope you get to work. As easy as Linux has become, I imagine it’ll still be a little rough for new comers. Or at least, not as easy as windows.

@Satanu_Reeves It's too much for me. I followed all the directions and got it installed but it wouldn't boot. :disappointed: If you ever figure it out and want to talk a noob through installing it I'll be around, just tag me. :)
