Sims in .sim vs .package files

Hello,

I was wondering what's the difference when you download sims in .sim file vs .package file. I know .sim files go in the SavedSims folder and show up as premade sims. But what about sims in .package files, where do they show up in-game? And is one extension better than the other?

Thanks!

  • The .package files should be inside the “The Sims 3/Downloads” folder. If not, move them and install with the Sims 3 launcher.
  • Install .package files with the launcher? Isn't the launcher only for .sims3pack files?

Oh! Sorry, I’m wrong. The .package files should be mod or custom content.
However, I’ve never seen a saved Sim which is .package file. Hope other can help.
  • I never seen a saved sim as a .package
But its worth a try, trying placing it into the "savedsims" folder. And if she/he shows up.If not, try in your mods/packages folder if you use mods.
  • Sims that are in package form go into you Library folder.
They will be found in your library in edit town mode.

@ingridmf I did a tutorial on sim files versus package files and how to install them without adding borked cc to your game. Way more information than you asked for but here it is!

  • A sim in .package form is really a single-sim household, so it goes in Library. What the various folders are for:

    • Library: Saved households and lots, i.e. anything that you created or downloaded that appears in the in-game bin; these are always in .package form (and can be renamed if you want, as long as you keep the .package extension)
    • Mods\Packages: Mods, obviously, and also .package-based custom content, but only items—furniture, hair, clothing, etc.—or merged custom content files
    • SavedSims: Sims that have been saved in CAS and can be accessed there; these files end in .sim
  • .package files are good for transferring sims with skills and/or inventory items.
.sim files just transfer a new sim with no skills/property
  • Thank you all for your answers! I had put them in my Mods folder and I never realized until now that I couldn't find them anywhere lol

@skybaker @GraceyManor Originally they were .sims3pack files that I converted into .package because I hate the installation process via the launcher and it's way harder to remove completely when it's installed that way.

@Buffyspiker Thank you, will put in the Library folder!

@ZeeGee Thanks for the video, I'll check it out

@puzzlezaddict @Mikezumi Thanks for the breakdown, it was super helpful!
