So...what exactly causes corruption of save games?

I noticed that in TS3, my saves tend to corrupt/bug out after a certain amount of time. Like I created one and played it for a significant amount of time until it got corrupted to the point of unplayablility (horrible lag, crashes), so I created a new one. This one only lasted a few in-game weeks before I couldn't select a family from edit town anymore, it would just freeze everytime I tried. I then had another save that lasted a bit longer, but then the lag started again, now I am at a new save which still works fine. What I'd like to know is if there are any known causes for save file corruption that are avoidable through player intervention? Does hardware play a role in this? I just got a new gaming pc, but haven't played enough on it to test it properly. I read a few times that having testingcheats activated during saving can corrupt save files in the long run, is this true and are there other player-triggered things that can cause this? I know that mods like mastercontroller and overwatch can help prevent save game corruption, but I already had all those in my game when the aforementioned bugs happened.

@Huiiie_07 - I'm afraid we can't begin to understand what is happening there without being able to read the script logs that are generated as a result of those errors. They could be minor, worthy of ignoring, something that's easy to fix, or indicating something more serious with the ongoing game. If you could bring them to us at NRaas, we would be happy to help interpret them.

Where do I find the script logs?
  • They accumulate in your TS3 user game folder in Documents and look like ScirptError+(name of computer)+date/time stamp+some hex codes. When you get to about 11-12 of then, they should start overwritiing each other with the oldest ones going out first.
  • Thank you! I've got 11 in my folder, I am gonna start a thread at NRaas and just paste them there.
  • My crash analayzer told me mine was due to incompatible graphics
But I had my laptop checked and there's nothing wrong with it.And usually its RAM that gives me issues lol.
  • I have saves I still play that are from when Adventures was the newest pack. When I have a save that wont load I move it to desk top, start a new game, name it the same, then copy the file contents from the original into the new save folder. The save works fine after that. Also, open your saves folder and check to see if there are any labled "bad", delete them if there are. This does not effect the original save.
I never turn off testing cheats, it doesn't seem to cause any trouble. I do though, turn off buydebug as soon as I am done with it.

@igazor What is a dream manager?

A Dream Manager is what tracks and credits sims' dreams, promised wishes, and opportunities. Under EA standard, only the active played household has Dream Managers running on them. If we switch households, that stops and all dreams and promises get dropped.

If mods are used to switch active households, we have the choice as to whether to make the switches Dream Catching or not -- how to do this depends on the mod. Dream Catching means that the DMs continue to run on the now inactive household. Too many of these, and how many is "too many" is impossible to define as it will be different for everyone and every world, can be detrimental to game performance.

If using NRaas mods, we can see how many sims in our world have DMs running by using a MasterController filter. For example, on City Hall, NRaas > MC > Sim > Basic > Family Tree (or something harmless like that) > Filter to Has Dream Manager. The ones on inactive households can be cleared all at once with MC > Town > Drop All Dreams and Opportunities. This doesn't affect the active household, just the others, but unfortunately the drops cannot be done selectively.
  • This game has so many bugs that its just frustrating. If I liked sims 4 I had moved on already, because I am really getting annoyed with the sims 3.
Just last week I started a new save in Sunlit Tides with the Strong family, which consists of a father and his teenager daughter. So I enrolled the daughter on boarding school and the father got a girlfriend and I asked her to move in (while the daughter was still in boarding school) and she accepted it. The second she was in my household the daughter automatically left boarding school without gaining any skills or traits, and then I couldnt control them. The white mark when we select a sim was on all 3 panels (father daughter and girlfriend), and as much as I switched between the 3 of them, the pictures changed but I only saw the stuff related to the girlfriend. In the end I exited without saving and gave up on living with the girlfriend.

@akaniki0 So you are saying that after creating a new complete save, you basically delete everything inside the folder and copy all the 5 files to that folder? How does that help? It feels like all you are doing is creating a new folder? :o

@kiara07 That's happened (the bolded text) a few times in my games too, maybe 4-6 times since I first started playing TS3 in the fall 2011, when a human sim or pet moves in, and all I've had to do was save the game, go to main menu and exit to desktop. And then delete all the cache files as usual before starting over, and when I was back to the family everything was perfectly okay and normal again. :)
