Sims will also shake hands when you have them visit another household's lot in order to be greeted and allowed inside. Sometimes that looks fine, but I have to say it looks ridiculous when you are visiting your best friend's house or that of someone your sim is dating. Or even more silly, when your sim's parents or grown children come over for a visit. :|
