I don't remember how it worked first time, but I'm pretty sure there used to be the show package contents option.

Because you're not doing it correctly. You should right click on the base game WITHIN the Sims 3 folder in your Applications folder, not the Sims 3 folder itself. It's really important to follow file paths correctly when attempting to follow instructions.
