I was just wondering what exactly did you give your Sims when first starting. How big was your house etc. I started out with a house consisting of 3 box rooms.
Lounge/kitchen (6wx9h) 2 counters, sink, stove, fridge, fire alarm, bin, 4 island counters/3 stools.
I used a more expensive fridge and sink. If you want to bring down the cost, use the cheapest fridge and sink, forget the fire alarm, (be sure to teach sim cooking skill and/or make a lot of salad so as not to burn down the house) and replace island counter/stools, with table/chairs (cheapest long table and chairs cost $400 instead of the $600 plus of other)
Up the other end I had the cheapest of the 2 seater sofa, coffee table, bookcase, desk/desk chair/computer and the 2nd TV. I added a mat, mirror, and pot plant which you can leave off to save money. I used a trick I learn from Landros09's YouTube to make the TV bigger. It works on most things so you can use cheaper, smaller things in place of larger more expensive things.
Shift + ] =do this while "holding" or before placing an item. NB I suggest doing it one "hit" at a time. Some things get pretty big quickly. The room may be a bit small compared to how other Simmers do it but if you place the furniture so there is at least on square around the main pieces of furniture so you have multiple routes for a sim it works.
Bedroom (6wx5h) Double bed, side table/lamp and painting. I did the re-sizing thing with the painting in here. I use a more expensive double bed, but you can use the cheapest, leave off the side table/lamp combo and place a wall light to reduce costs.
I placed the room up at the kitchen end
Bathroom (3x3) basic plumbing of course, plus mirror and pot plant. I used 2nd toilet and more expensive shower plus a few of the decorative items. You can just put in the cheapest plumbing and mirror to reduce cost.
I placed the room next to the bedroom at the furtherest end so the house looks like a misshaped upside down u. I'm going to add an entrance way in the space later.
I put used the cheapest wood flooring/carpet and painted walls/sidings, and added 2 windows either end of the lounge/kitchen, 2 windows in the bedroom and a the small rectanglular window in the bathroom. Add the entry door, bedroom door and arch to the bathroom.
I placed it on the Bargain Bend lot. (30x20) the house has no foundation or deck (which is not a problem caus now you can add them later!!)
I had around $4,000 left and my bills were around the $300 mark.
I started my Sim off in the writing career. The books she needs to write to get a promotion bring in extra cash. At the moment they're only worth around $20-$70 each but with several lots of royalties (around $300 mark now) a day coming in plus her daily wage, (she's level 5 now) I'm doing ok.
I have enough room to add 1 or 2 more rooms downstairs plus the hallway I want (I'll just move the bathroom and extend the Kitchen/living area!!! LOL) and add some bedrooms and another bathroom upstairs. If I move the house over a bit (giggling and dancing) I'll have room for a few outdoor activities including the rocket ship.
If you plan carefully you can build a heritage house on this lot. It just depends how many kids you want your sims to have.
Or am I missing the point all together?
