I do not think so. I've tried it and they don't use the table like if it was set up with dining chairs. For example, this set https://www.thesimsresource.com/downloads/details/category/sims3-sets-objects-diningroom/title/hunt-dining/id/1206360/ has pieces that will work. The objects that say "dining" will work for eating whereas the "love seat" will not.

This set is cute - http://modthesims.info/d/418069/hold-your-hurdy-gurdles-austrian-dining-bench-bonus-cushions.html but as stated, the "bench" is a loveseat and works as such so it's mostly for looks. The dining chairs will work for eating.
A sectional sofa will work as a sofa, not for dining. If you use the, I think it's called dive bar seating, it will work like a dining chair but your room will look like a restaurant.
So for the most part, some of it works and other parts of it is just for show.
