Using a custom house in a different save

I spent weeks constructing an amazing house thanks to a TON of help here on the forums. I am playing a different save now and want to use that house in it. Can I upload the house to some kind of library without the people that live in it?

  • The Library (houses, commercial lots and families that you've created in the Sims game) is contained in your Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Library folder. That's where you can place your home.

How to save your home to the "bin/Library"

Step one: Go to Edit Town.
Step two: Evict the people in the house; now you have a vacant house.
Step three: click on the house and "Save Copy to Library".
When you load up your new game, you go into your game "Edit Town" and look in the"Show Empty Houses" in your Households menu (the middle tab of the three tabs at the top of the menu of households in your bin along the bottom of your screen) and you will see it as one of the most recent selections.

You don't have to upload it on the Exchange to use it yourself.
  • Thank you Nikkei! After I save a copy to my library, can I then put my displaced family back into it in the old save?
  • @Rhiannon58 Don't save after you have moved the family out and saved the house to the library. It will be like it never happened. If I need to do something like this while I am playing, I will save before moving the family out and then quit without saving after saving the house.
  • So I did the exact steps above and it appeared to work. I now have the lovely customized empty house in my town, just waiting for a family to have enough cash to move into it. Immediately after doing the above, I rotated into one of my families. Note that I have NRaas installed and use it to play rotationally like TS2.

As soon as I rotated into my family, I noticed a problem. I keep track of how old my Sims are in a document and it said that the dad was 3 days to adult. When I rotated in, he was showing as 6 days to adult. Then I noticed that when I cycled through the family members, the "face" that shows of the person you are currently looking at never changed from the daughter. And Simology, job, skills, inventory was acting flakey as well. Sometimes it showed another family member and sometimes not. Then at what was showing 3 days to adult, the dad has his birthday. I "checked in the family" with NRass and rotated out and into another family. Only the new family member display is showing the previous family. Not the one I'm currently playing.

What have I done to my game?

Probably nothing. Many of us see this glitch from time to time (with or without mods) and it usually clears itself up by saving (as), quitting all the way to the desktop or Origin, and reloading the game.
  • Shew! Thank you Igazor. I was sitting here freaking out. I'll do that and resume play tomorrow.
