I pre-decide my Sims writing genre when I create them in CAS. So, I know this Sim is going to be a Mystery writer and that Sim is going to pen Humor books. I also use the writing skill a bit differently, depending on the career or lifestyle of Sim doing the writing. I mostly use the non-fiction genre because I can apply it to any job/lifestyle or event in my game. These books aren't really meant to generate money, they serve only as a reminder of things which have happened in my Sims life or in my game itself.
My Newspaper Journalists (depending on their department) will title their articles based on what I have upcoming for the world such as 'Old Pier Beach Gets New Look'. My celebrities write non-fiction books based on something which has actually happened to them. For instance, while in Bridgeport my 5-star celeb was hauled into court an excessive amount of times to defend his name. After the last trip to court, I had him sit down and pen a book titled 'Land of Liars: My Bridgeport Experience'. My Scientists write books about discoveries in their fields (non-fictions). My artists write 'How To Books' (non-fiction), My 5-Star Chefs write cookbooks based on their specialties (also non-fiction) and so-on.
Here's some of my top selling titles:
Bandages By The BBQ: Learning to Grill (cookbook - non-fiction)
Love Taps: The New Morse Code (Trashy)
When Lifefruit Goes Bad (Humor)
The Lore of The Watcher (Historical)
On The Horizon, Off The Grid (Sci-Fi)
