Consignment shop arbitrage between a normal consignment shop and an alchemy consignment shop is usually how most fresh start games get their initial sizeable stake.
Using the science skill to clone supernovium and/or tiberium. Sell at the alchemy shop for even more.
Once fame kicks in (specially at 5 stars) using the expected celebrity discounts and re-sell gag.
Every so often I will make a family that farms red berry beans.
And finally, my actual favorite way hidden in the game, selling death fish. Not necessarily the ones my sims fish out of the ponds either, but using the aquariums to breed the biggest ones they catch over and over. One family had about a dozen fish tanks going. Selling off the daily supply of new spawn kept the money stash growing and growing.
