In my ongoing game the family is only three generations.
there is:
grandmother+grandfather
they have 3 young adult children, two of them are married
3 grandchildren
I moved them several times between saves (through the family bin), and one of the YA (the one that is not married) went to university (don't know if this is also related).
At some point, not sure when, the sister-in-law and brother-in-law relationships broke. it means that they appear correctly as the spouses, and as parents, but with the in-laws they appear as friend... One time after I played other household and than got back to this family, I found out the grandfather had a date with his son's wife... whaaat???
There are some cheats for family tree but there is no option to add an in-law relationship...
