Re: [CURRENT ISSUE 64-bit] Base game incompatible with expansion pack error

I recently got a new laptop so I have reinstalled the sims 3 via origin, however when the game installed all the expansion packs seemed to be added on to the base game already and did not make me install and add on each separately. Im getting an error message when I launch the game so I think I may need to apply the fixes but the game icon is not showing in my applications folder on my mac? It shows on the launchpad so is there a way I can copy it across?

Hey @millieee44 it's hard to make out the error message that you shared, is it a case that you need to update your base game to a more recent version?

@millieee44  If you've installed the 64-bit version of Sims 3, you already have the most updated version, and in fact the only version available.  And given the description of how you installed the game, it sounds like you do have the 64-bit version.

Anyway, for this error, please go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 and delete the file labeled Version.tag.  If you don't see that file, make sure you're in the local version of Documents and not the one in iCloud Drive.

The Sims 3.app is probably in Users > your username > Applications rather than the main Applications folder.  It's fine there, but if you want, you can drag it and the Sims 3 Packs folder to the main Applications, literally drag and drop.

    Hi

I'm trying to find the electronic arts folder but it doesn't look like its been saved when I installed the game? The only icons Ive got is the Sims 3 icon and then a folder called The Sims 3 packs? Not sure why its missing?

    Thanks.

@millieee44  It sounds like you're looking in one of the Applications folders: that's where the Sims 3.app and Sims 3 Packs folder should be.  If these are in fact somewhere inside Documents, please let me know; you can see the file path by right-clicking on either one and selecting Get Info.

If these are in fact in Applications where they should be, you can search for Version.tag directly.  It won't show up in a Spotlight search, but Terminal will find it.  Open Applications > Utilities, launch Terminal, and copy and paste this:

    find / -name "Version.tag" 2>/dev/null

You can check the location(s) it spits out, or if you're not sure what you're looking at, please post the results.  It's fine to write [username] instead of your actual username, but please leave the rest of the file path intact.

    Hi

Thanks so much for that! I have just done the search on terminal and these are the results, not too sure what I am looking at where do I go from here?

    Thanks 🙂

@millieee44  Open a Finder window and click Macintosh HD, or whatever you've renamed your hard disk, in the left panel.  (If you don't see it, click Finder in the upper left corner of your screen, then Preferences > Sidebar, and check the box next to hard disks.)  Then open Users > your username > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3, and delete Version.tag, which Terminal says is present.

In the future, when taking a screenshot, please use cmd-shift-4 and drag your cursor over the section of screen you want to capture.  The screenshot will land on your desktop, and you can attach it to a post from there.  It's a lot easier to read one of those than a photo from your phone.
