Alright, I think I understand what you're saying - tell me if I haven't.
Your saves are located in documents / electronic arts / sims 3 / saves - your save files are there. Unless you backed up that file when you reinstalled, your reinstallation most likely overwrote / deleted that file (if my memory serves me correctly). However, if you did then you just need to copy whichever save you want (the actual save folder - so for example: sunsetvalley.sims3) and put it in your new save folder in documents / electronic arts / sims 3
With switching saves -well you just pretty much move the save folders around like that ^
