That may be a similar glitch some people have with World Adventures. On the day the friends should arrive, please check if they are still greyed out in the relationship panel. If they are not greyed out, just invite them again.

What happens there is that they arrive in your world, but somehow totally forget that they wanted to visit you. (Perhaps they have too much fun exploring your world. 😕mileywink🙂 As they are already in your world you don't have to call/invite them long distance anymore, just invite them over like you would with anyone else in your world.
