Game crash upon viewing vacant home

Just recently loaded up Sims 3 after about a year away.

Everything was going great, until I was in Town View, reacquainting myself with my Sim's neighbors.  I had remembered there was this one lot/house I had kept empty because I am planning to (eventually) move him into there and didn't want anyone else moving into there in the meantime.

Anyway, I wanted to have a look at it, because I couldn't quite remember the details of it.

However, the moment I focused in on that lot, the game crashed. Just poof, gone, crashed back to desktop.

I recall I had this happen before, a year-plus ago when I last played this save as well.

Obviously if I just avoid looking at that lot during game play, I have no issues.  But it still is a bit weird. I do not have any problem focusing/zooming on occupied lots/houses. It's only that vacant one that it seems to happen.

  • UltimateMara  Does this happen at any time of day or night?  Does it happen in a new save?  Please test both and let me know.  Please also let me know whether focusing on a different lot nearby, then scrolling to this one, causes the same issue.

  • Just now, I checked at both around 9pm and 3am in-game time - crashed both times when zooming down from Map View.   Haven't attempted during the day yet.

I also tried zooming back down to my Sim's lot: no problem there.  No issue also with a couple occupied lots nearby that I checked, for science.

However, when zooming in from Map View to the vacant lot, to the occupied lot next door, and also to the occupied lot two down, I crashed on all of those.  Same for another house nearby (one street over). (So maybe my memory was failing me, or I hadn't actually zoomed in on the neighboring house(s) before). I wasn't able to scroll over to next door, before it crashed.

For science, I stayed in regular view, and just slowly WASD'd my way down through the map in regular view, and once I got close enough to where that street begins and the homes came into render, I crashed.

Obviously I didn't take the time to click on ALL the lots in the town, so I cannot be certain, but it seems possibly restricted to this one street/area where the vacant lot is, and not just an issue with Map View/zoom? Or maybe just a very weird coincidence. (There is one other vacant lot in town as well, on the opposite end of the map; no crashing when zooming in on that one or its close neighbors.)

With a new save, I went right into Map View, zoomed in on a few lots, both occupied and vacant, in different areas, with no issues. This was during daytime, when first loading in.

This is a save I've had for a while - years probably.  Far as I can remember, I first encountered this crashing issue last year.  I have another (even older, larger save), but I don't believe I have any vacant lots left in that town, so I cannot compare.

I do also have Master Controller and other NRAAS mods installed; I'm not sure if a resent town/lot or something similar would help? I haven't tried anything like that yet.

Anyway, thanks for looking into this puzzlezaddict.  It is not really a game-breaking problem for me, but it is a strange  bug, nonetheless!

  • UltimateMara  I would definitely try an MC town reset, followed by quitting/deleting the cache files/reloading before you test.  And hopefully ErrorTrap and Overwatch are also present.

Another thing you could try is placing a build on this lot.  I'm not sure whether the game would crash, but if it doesn't, you could delete the build afterwards.  You might need to do this for the surrounding houses too, depending on where the problem is.

It's definitely strange, but hopefully fixable.  If you get stuck, and you want me to take a look at the save, feel free to upload it somewhere and either post the link here or send it to me via PM.  Let me know what world it's in, and I need a link too if it's a custom world.

  • After MC Town Reset** and etc. - focused back on that house, crashed.

Went into Edit Town, clicked build/buy on that house - crashed when it focused/loaded in.

Went into Edit Town, bulldozed the house, returned to game, focused onto the now empty lot - crashed.

This is definitely a weird one lol.

And yes, I do also have ErrorTrap and Overwatch.

** Only thing that came of that was three fridge exception messages when it finished.  And now when I first I load in, I get three fridge null messages and sometimes the exception ones as well.  Not sure if related at all to the weird crashing issue.

  • UltimateMara  You could try deleting anything in inventory with MC.  The command is NRaas > MC > Town Options > Object Stats; I would choose Inventory as the subcategory.  You'll get a list of items to remove.  Be sure to avoid deleting your own sims' inventory items.  Or you could remove everything, as a test, and only go back to be more selective if it helps.

I'd still quit and reload after purging the inventories and before testing.

I'd also like to see the error messages you're getting.

  • (Apologies for the delay, haven't been able to get to my game in a few days)

After flushing the non-essential inventory items, still crash upon zooming onto that empty house lot.

As for error messages - do mean the pop-ups in-game, or the script errors  and/or xcpt files I get after the game closes/crashes?

Also maybe it's worth noting, but after the inventory flush, I did not see those null fridge exception message(s) I had been getting after the town reset.    (Only one I've gotten is ErrorTrap message regarding an imaginary friend doll, and I've been getting those forever so it's nothing new, I just haven't bothered deleting the thing yet).

  • UltimateMara  Any errors you're seeing while playing would be of interest, whether they're pop-ups or scripterrors in your user folder.

Issues with an imaginary friend can definitely cause this kind of problem, so I would address that sooner rather than later.  And you're probably aware, but in case you're not, any IF that has been animated is also a sim, so you'd need to do an MC Total Annihilation on the sim in addition to deleting the doll.

  • Okay this is the first of three scripterrors I have from the last time I played a couple weeks back. (Haven't had much time recently).

The other two are shorter and appear to mainly reference the IF (Jelly Bean).

(If you meant the xcpt files instead, I can dig those out of my Recycle Bin but it seems like a lot of gibberish, to me lol).

Anyway, off to delete that little bothersome fella and see what happens. (The IF belongs to a NPC/townie, so I would highly doubt it's become animated).

Okay little dude has been flushed. Saved the game.   Tested the empty home for science, game crash.

Script errors from just now when I first loaded in (just before removing the IF).  Those are the only pop-ups I had in-game (excluding normal mod notices); nothing about the fridges any more, just good ol' Jelly Bean from ErrorTrap.

Now going back in to check.

Nope, still crashes when I zoom onto that vacant house.

However, no notices from ErrorTrap - just as before, the usual pop-ups from a few mods, like Story Progression, etc. So no scripterrors, just the xcpt .mdmp (which I presume is the crash file).

Oh well, at least the IF is gone? LOL

  • UltimateMara  To be clear, there are no longer any errors that mention Jelly Bean?  The first scripterror you posted was a correction log, so if you're only seeing those, there's nothing to do on that front.  I do however see one UNHANDLED entry in the first one.  If that specific error keeps happening, it would be best to remove all your non-NRaas mods and test again to see if it goes away.  These errors are not necessarily serious, but that is ErrorTrap's way of saying it couldn't fix something, so it's worth watching at the very least.

For the broken lot, I still think you might need to use MasterController to delete whole categories of items to see whether you can find the type that's an issue, then backtrack from there.  It may or may not have anything to do with the ET UNHANDLED entry, which itself looks like it's coming from content related to a Battery mod, but that could also be pointing to the Battery utility some other mod is using.  Beyond that, this would be something to ask on the NRaas site, whether or not it's causing the crashes.

  • Correct, once I removed/flushed the IF, I did not have any errors regarding it. Though I have only gone in game once since I had done that.

I will mess around some more with MC and objects, then.  And I guess just avoid focusing on that lot/area when I'm playing for now.

Thank you for all your help in trying to diagnose this weird issue. :)
