The Sims 3 "A serious error occurred while trying to load"

Hi I have had this issue since I built this PC a few months back and haven't been able to play the Sims 3 on my nice new gaming pc yet. Everytime i try to load a new world it says "a serious error occurred while trying to load "nameofworld.word, we strongly recommend restarting the application". I tried moving the sims 3 files and having it create new ones but it doesn't help. Through research I found out onedrive is most likely the culprit, i tried pausing onedrive but it did nothing. However, most people say you have to literally DELETE onedrive alltogether to get it to work and that is not something I'm willing to do. Any solutions that don't involve removing onedrive? I'm really desperate to able to play The Sims 3 on my new custom built gaming pc. I literally got all the other sims games working on it, and I don't mean the legacy editions, I mean the original versions. I have the Sims 1 complete collection and the Sims 2 ultimate collection running on this pc by using some internet fixes. But i still can't get The Sims 3 and it's driving me crazy, I love The Sims 3. Please help.

  • Searched "how to stop OneDrive from backing up a specific folder". "To stop OneDrive from backing up a specific folder, you need to access OneDrive settings and then manage the backup of your folders. Navigate to the "Sync and backup" tab, select "Manage backup," and then deselect the checkbox next to the folder you wish to exclude from backing up."

I imagine unchecking the box next to the Electronic Arts folder should do the trick. Always back up your folders before doing anything with them, especially concerning OneDrive. I've not personally done this since I disabled OneDrive on my laptop when I bought it, so your mileage may vary.

NOTE: If you search for the text above, you can view detailed instructions on how to do this.

I cannot stop onedrive from backing up electronic arts, it's in my documents folder and onedrive doesn't let you opt out of backing that up.

I dont see any way to do it on that post. My documents folder isnt listed as a folder i can opt out of syncing to onedrive.

  • neoromanempire  Sorry for the late reply.  The info is under the spoiler, but I've heard that not everyone has every option.  Still, look at all the options listed and you should find one you can try.

And again, a new, local Windows account is not linked to OneDrive by definition, so it's a quick way around all of this.

I already created a new local account and it worked but it was causing issues with other applications and shared files between accounts so i had to delete it. I need to get sims 3 working on this account. I cant change onedrive backing up to documents, the option is not available for me.

  • neoromanempire  Then get rid of OneDrive, unless you really can't live without it.  In that case, let me know; we can try another approach that I'm not sure will work but could help.

  • neoromanempire  The way to keep OneDrive from backing up Documents is covered in the thread I linked earlier.  If you're not understanding what it's saying, use this guide instead:

[CURRENT ISSUE] Sims 4 saves/user content disappearing (PC) | EA Forums - 11838402

The guide was written with Sims 4 in mind, but the settings are the same.  Choose the "I don't want OneDrive to sync my files" or "I want to get rid of OneDrive" section and follow the instructions there.

There are two alternatives I can suggest.  One is to move the Documents directory out of OneDrive, BUT keep OneDrive active, so you can manually move any files you'd like backed up to the OneDrive folder.  Think of it as a "this is stuff I want synced" folder, where you have to add the files yourself, but then OneDrive will back them up for you.

The other option is to create a symbolic link to move the Sims 3 user folder out of Documents.  However, if you can't follow the instructions for changing OneDrive settings, I don't want to walk you through the symlink process because it's been known to break things when done improperly.  It also often confuses players who don't understand the underlying concept.  I'm not trying to be rude here, only saying that if the OneDrive instructions aren't working for you, neither will this.
