Hey! So there is a workaround for this!

Stick with me on the explanation, might be kinda long.

I have a bakery owned by the Mylo household. When I took the Matthews household to the bakery, I was unable to purchase anything!

I had to load up the Mylo household, go to the bakery/retail lot and open it.

Once the retail lot was "opened" I was then able to go back onto the Matthews family and purchase items!

I've tested this with two other retail lots.
(sucks that they have to stay open? I worry how that will work?)

Have not tested a clinic yet though.

@Vandipitty Had to do that with the Vet clinic. May need to them to update this.
